When Volkswagen needed to fill an important gap in their line up, the German automaker turned to Chrysler whose best selling line of minivans were just what the doctor ordered. Since coming to the market last year, the Routan minivan hasn't sold all that well, but neither have most vehicles in its segment.
For Volkswagen, a strong selling Routan is necessary in order to ensure that its family carrying model offerings are complete. VW has a pair of sport/utility models in their line up, but no crossover model. Thus, the Routan minivan fills the gap whether it is a strong seller or not.
EPA fuel economy ratings are actually better for the 4.0-liter engine, an estimated 17/25 city/highway, compared to 16/23 for the 3.8-liter. However, the 3.8-liter engine burns regular gasoline, while Volkswagen recommends mid-grade fuel for the 4.0-liter.
