next-generation Chevrolet Aveo will be called the Chevrolet Sonic

As we first reported just a few days ago, the Aveo name is being phased out for Chevrolet’s next-generation small car, which we can confirm today will be called the Sonic. Production is to begin in early 2011 at GM’s Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which is receiving a $545 million investment in upgrades and retooling to accommodate the new car.

According to GMI, former U.S. marketing chief Mark LaNeve originally wanted to rename the Aveo to “Viva.” Then, following General Motor’s bankruptcy filing in 2009, former GM vice president Bob Lutz ordered the Aveo name to stay put.
